In an office near the front of the Buckner Children and Family Services campus in Longview, Texas, Buckner Family Coach Courtney Barr visits with a mom. Her family is struggling financially, and she’s looking for a path to a brighter future.

Courtney and the mother talk about her strengths, dreams and goals. They discuss ways the mom will turn those thoughts into reality. When they have a general plan, Courtney encourages the young lady. The mom is excited and ready to go.

Then, reality sets in. Her face changes as she sees the challenges before her. Doubt creeps in. Possibly even fear.

The mom is like a lot of us sitting on the precipice of something new, be it a new home, new city, new job or something new in life. No matter how great or amazing the goal might be in the distance, it’s easy for us to get lost in the challenges and unknown between where we are and where we want to be.

This morning, here are three principles for beginning something new:

  1. Start with prayer. Let God guide your actions from the very start. He will tell you when to begin a journey and how to do that.
  2. Keep your focus on Christ. Guides tell new mountain climbers not to look down when they’re scaling a mountain. Stay focused on what’s at hand and what’s ahead. Similarly, on your new journey stay focused on Christ in your life and your goal ahead. It’s hard to be scared by the unknown when you’re not focused on it.
  3. Celebrate the small victories. Long journeys are made up of small steps. As you make progress in your journey, celebrate along the way. Rejoice in the victories you experience. It’ll inspire you to continue.

Let us walk in the footsteps of the Lord this week.

The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid? –Psalm 27:1

Deeper reflection:

  • Is God calling you to something new this week? What is it?
  • What scares us when God calls us to something new?

Next steps:

  • Begin praying for God to lead you this week on a new journey.
  • Take a step of faith.
