London went to college for four years, but she didn’t graduate. She admits she didn’t buckle down and focus on her education like she should have. Looking into the eyes of her daughter, she was ready to finish what she started.

“My daughter was my biggest motivation,” London said. “When my daughter turned two, I decided to go back to school. I had to go back to school to support my daughter. When she gets older, I can’t tell her to go to school if I didn’t.”

Although it wasn’t easy, London did not give up. She went through many obstacles, but Courtney, a Buckner Project HOPES parent educator in Beaumont, Texas, was there for her along the way.

“When I would go do my visits with her, I would always pray with her and her daughter because of all the stress she was going through,” Courtney said. “I would always tell her, ‘Don’t give up because you’re a strong woman and you’re a role model to your daughter.’”

London plugged away at her classes, graduating with honors. Now, she’s working on her master’s degree.

Many experts in their fields encourage people to “know their why” before embarking on an effort to change their lives. Whenever the journey becomes difficult, individuals can remember their motivation and push forward.

For London, the motivation was before her daily. In fact, it was looking into her eyes. London wanted to show her daughter that a better life was possible.

What journey are you on this week? And what’s your motivation?

Let the words of Isaiah 41:10 wash over you this week.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
