Friday photo: Shoes for Orphan Souls® mission trip is life changing

Last month, 13 people from across the U.S. traveled to the Dominican Republic for a Shoes for Orphan Souls® mission trip, distributing shoes and conducting Vacation Bible School for vulnerable children Buckner serves.

For one week, volunteers had the opportunity to bring joy and laughter to the children Buckner serves by greeting them with a smile and taking the time to wash their feet and help them try on brand new shoes.

“The kids were absolutely awesome,” Christine Potter said. “To bring such big smiles to their faces was priceless. I am just sad that it was over so soon.”

Her husband, Steve Potter, agreed that the experience was one he and his wife would always treasure.

“To bring joy and laughter to kids that don’t get this all the time was amazing,” he said, as tears fell down his face. “Making the children happy just by being myself and being goofy was awesome – I would definitely do it again.”

Lucas Lipscomb, 18, and Reese Whitlock, 18, admit they were pushed out of their comfort zones on their first mission trip, but said it was the best experience of their lives.

“I had never done a mission trip before,” Lucas said. “It was eye-opening to see all the children and help them out, and it set me on a path to wanting to help more in the future.”
