What young Christians can learn from senior adults

An 84-year-old retiree and a young college graduate.

On the surface, these two don't have much in common. One communicates almost entirely through 21st century technology and social media. The other only occasionally emails his closest friends and relatives. One has lived through his wife's cancer diagnosis, multiple moves across the globe, and the births of grandchildren. The other is single, still living at home and more concerned about her social life than her bank account.

However, from an eternal perspective, these two Christ followers have much more in common than meets the eye. They are both loved by God, made in the image of God and devoted to God. And what's more? They can learn from each other too.

As this article from The Gospel Coalition argues, young adults have just as much, if not more, to learn from senior adults as senior adults do from young people. These adults, with anywhere from 40 to 80 years’ seniority on young people, have spent their lives walking with The Lord. They've seen firsthand the faithfulness and provision of their Heavenly Father. Their faith has been tested and they've stood the test.

For a young Christian learning how to serve with her whole life, a real-life example doesn't get much better than that.

Of course, the only way young adults can learn from senior adults is to spend time with them. Each Buckner Senior Living community readily accepts and encourages volunteers of all ages. To learn how you can get involved and partner with a senior adult in your area, contact your local Buckner community today.
