Buckner International President and CEO Albert Reyes announced Friday morning the statewide ministry is preparing for Hurricane Harvey’s expected Saturday night landfall and encouraged supporters to pray for the children, families and senior adults in its path.

Reyes said that Buckner ministries along the coast from the Rio Grande Valley to Beaumont are all in preparation based on their local needs.

Currently, residents at Buckner senior living communities in Houston and Beaumont, he noted, are planning to shelter in place.

“We are monitoring weather conditions affecting Parkway Place in Houston and Calder Woods in Beaumont and are taking appropriate precautions as Hurricane Harvey moves toward the Texas coast," he said. "As the situation evolves, we will continue to proactively put the safety of our residents first.”

He said most of Buckner’s children and family ministries in Beaumont, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley, including foster families, transitional program residents and families participating in Buckner Family Hope Center programs, will either shelter in place or evacuate, depending on local predictions.

He also urged supporters to pray for the affected areas and Buckner ministries, clients and staff members.

“With Hurricane Harvey just off the coast of Texas and expected to be a Category 3 bringing flooding rains when it makes landfall Saturday night, I am asking for your prayers for the children, families and senior adults we serve in the affected areas,” he wrote in a Friday email to supporters.

He encouraged prayer specifically for the following affected ministries:

  • Beaumont and surrounding areas: Please pray for our foster families and their children; our senior adult residents at Calder Woods senior living community who are sheltering in place; the young adults we serve through programs transitioning them from foster care to independent adult living; and our ministry teams who serve these families. Our Southeast Texas Executive Director Laura May asked specifically for prayer “for our children to feel safe during this time and pray for our staff and foster families who are in areas where flooding occurs.”
  • Houston and Conroe: Please pray for the children and families we serve through the Buckner Family Hope Center at Houston/Aldine; our foster families and their children in the Conroe/North Houston area; our senior adult residents at Parkway senior living community who are sheltering in place; the patients we serve through Buckner Hospice; the mothers and their children in our Buckner Family Pathways program and our ministry teams who serve these families. Also, please pray that the construction team and site of our new Buckner Family Hope Center at Houston/Star of Hope Cornerstone Community remain safe.
  • Austin: Please pray for our senior adult residents at Buckner Villas senior living community who are sheltering in place. Austin is expecting high amounts of rainfall and flooding.
  • The Rio Grande Valley: Please pray for the children and families we serve through the Buckner Family Hope Center at Peñitas; our foster families and their children; and our ministry teams who serve these families.
  • Please pray specifically for our staff, who are both ministering to those we serve and their own families. Pray for their safety and the safety of their families and homes.
  • Finally, please pray for all of the Texans along the Gulf Coast. There are millions of people in Harvey’s path who are in need of your prayers right now. Please join me in praying for their safety and God’s comfort on them.
