Continually learning is one of the keys to continual growth and improvement. So in honor of National Book Month, each Tuesday of the month we're going to share some of the books that we find helpful, insightful and encouraging.

The first book informs much of how Buckner serves vulnerable families through our Buckner Family Hope Centers and Buckner Family Pathways ministries. When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself examines ways we can empower stuggling families to acheive long-term success.

For the longest time, churches and ministries have focused efforts for the poor on benevolent services such as food pantries, clothes closets and rent assistance. There's clearly a need for these types of efforts. They meet immediate needs at critical points.

But they often fail to have a long-term impact. They rarely address on-going needs and underlying issues.

Through the book, we learn how ministry with vulnerable families is exactly that: a ministry with, not to. The journey toward self-sufficiency should be embarked upon by families living in poverty and we must walk alongside them to help them meet their goals.

When Helping Hurts is full of practical examples of empowering ministries and life-changing principles. If you haven't read it, we highly encourage you to do so.
