(LIMA, Peru) — With more than 440 people reported dead and thousands injured following the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Peru earlier this week, Buckner International is requesting donations of humanitarian aid for shipment to the struggling South America country in their time of need.
“We are not a disaster relief organization, but we have a responsibility to help our brothers and sisters in crisis,” said Rachel Garton, director of Shoes for Orphan Souls. “We already have a container scheduled to send shoes and humanitarian aid to Peru in a few weeks. This is the perfect opportunity for us to really provide the victims with their most pressing needs.”
The following items are requested for donation:

-- Blankets
-- Towels
-- Basic medicine and first aid supplies (alcohol, bandages, pain relievers, etc.)

Buckner International currently supports eight government and privately-run orphanages in Lima and Cusco. Buckner staff in Peru is developing a foster care program and looking to expand their support into the northern jungles of Iquitos. About 42,000 pounds of shoes and other humanitarian aid are shipped to Peru each year.
