Faith Focus: Shining light

“And if you pour out that with which you sustain your own life for the hungry and satisfy the need of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in darkness, and your obscurity [and] gloom become like the noonday. And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought [and] in dry places and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.” Isaiah 58:10-11 (AMP)

When our lives are fully given to God to be used as he wills, joy and peace abound. His light in us will shine in the darkness.

I have experienced this working with Buckner. I am so blessed to be a volunteer at the Wynnewood Family Hope Center in Dallas and to shine light into the lives of the children in that community.

It’s such a blessing to remind them of the three things that will change their lives forever if they allow it to. First, they are loved: first by God, but also by all of us. Second, they are smart. They have an amazing future ahead and we encourage them to dream big. And third, they are talented. Each one of them has something unique and special to offer this world. That is how God designed them.

I found myself sharing these same truths to children on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic with Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls®. The smiles and giggles that accompany tickles on their tender feet are engraved in my heart forever.

The love of Jesus crosses every boundary and it can be recognized in the smallest of gestures. From the perfect pair of socks in just the right color, to the exact shoe that lights up a child’s whole face, love is present.

Sintia, from one of the orphanages we visited in the Dominican Republic, is a perfect example. When I asked her what kind of socks or shoes she wanted, she simply requested, “pink.” Nothing else was said, just “pink.”

As I searched for anything pink to grant her request, I came upon pink striped socks. I pulled them up as a joke to tease her, but her eyes lit up and she began to nod emphatically. She touched my heart that day with her enthusiasm over a simple pair of silly socks and the perfect shoes.

Through the simple gift of a pair of socks and shoes, a life was changed forever, shining light into the darkness.
