Friday was a significant holiday – at least for those of us who live in the Lone Star State. Did you miss it? Do you even know what it was?

Some of you are screaming “Of course!” at your screens right now. Consider yourself true Texans at heart. Only you would know that March 2 is Texas Independence Day. One hundred eighty-two years ago the Texas Declaration of Independence was adopted, announcing Texas’ freedom from Mexico.

That spirit of independence still shapes much of what Texas is about today. Texas Independence Day is a milestone that marks a moment that still impacts our lives.

Many of the families we serve have their own independence days. The date they walked away from unhealthy relationships. The date they gave up alcohol. The date they first entered a Buckner Family Hope Center.

From that point on, these families’ lives have never been the same. They haven’t always been smooth sailing, but like the state we call home, the years have been filled with growth and optimism.

What are the signposts that mark your life? What has served as turning points in your journey? Was it when you embraced a relationship with Christ? Was it a lifestyle change that you made?

How has your life been different since your independence day?

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. –Romans 8:1-4
