The Border

Connected through Service
There is a foot-wide hole in Antonia Ocón's living room. Spider webs cling to the room's corners. The floor would break if you jumped. And the windows are peep holes covered by plastic.

It’s been almost a year since the tornados ravaged Eagle Pass in April of 2007, but the need is still huge.

Guatemala

Playing to a Tough Crowd
Ask any missions team, and they’ll tell you: the older boys and teens living in San Gabriel Boys’ Home can be tough to handle. Those same teams also will tell you there’s one way to get their attention. Play hard.

Honduras Photo Gallery
Bare feet, shaved heads and desperate circumstances abound in Honduran orphanages. Russ Dilday, director of communications, visited many of these orphanages during an exploratory mission trip in February. View his online photo gallery here.

Honduras Ready for Buckner Aid, Volunteers
Not again, I thought as I passed through the single steel door of Nueva Esperanza’s 20-foot concrete wall. Not like Romania.

In Honduras, Government Collaboration and Access Puts Buckner on Fast Track
The question is asked of Buckner often. “If the orphanages are so bad, why doesn’t the Honduran government do something about them?”

Buckner Explores Needs in Mexico
It’s hard to put Mexico on paper. Its needs are as varied as the versions of “Mexican food” we eat in the United States.

Peru

Building Community in Peru’s Shanty Towns
On the outskirts of Lima, Peru live some of society’s most marginalized people. Many have escaped extreme conditions – guerilla warfare, drug cartels and unending poverty – in hopes of finding employment and a better life in “shanty towns.” But what they really find is more despair.

Meet Peru’s First Foster Family
Percy Huaroc and his wife Nancy don’t have any children of their own. They’ve spent most of their married lives focused on their careers.

Romania

Mission Trip Turned Ministry
Mission trips are often called “life-changing experiences.” This truly is the case with a small group of people from Illinois.

How You Can Change the World

To provide ministry and care for children, we work with you to focus on the delivery of basic, core programs designed to answer core needs of children in orphanages. Throughout all of our programs, we seek to meet the most basic need of all, to share the love of God with children and families.

Critical to the long-term success of Global Initiatives is the commitment to the indigenous model of ministry. By partnering with nationals to assess, plan, design and operate programs in their countries, Buckner helps promote independence and sustainable development.

Buckner offers more than a century of experience of providing critical programs for the most needy children and families, including:

Residential and Foster Care. In some countries, we provide residential care and foster care designed to give children a home with the structure and support they need to heal and recover from a family crisis or an abusive or neglectful situation.

Humanitarian Aid Assistance. Providing support such as food, clothing, and medicine, including our annual Shoes for Orphan Souls shoe drive and Gift Catalog, means children live healthier.

Orphanage Support. Construction projects and emergency repairs for the institutions in which these children live improves their surroundings. Buckner does not stop with their physical needs but send “follow-up staff” into the orphanage to share the gospel and disciple new Christians.

Church and Community Ministries. Buckner teams with Christians from local churches to provide ministries in their neighborhoods. Often children and families near the local church are the poorest of the poor suffering from lack of education, health care, or simple basic services. Working with the local church programs such as child development centers, schools, water wells, health clinics, and community centers are developed. This serves as the platform by which the Gospel can be shared.

Transitional Programs. Youth aging out of the orphanage system or young, homeless single parents need a safety net, the opportunity to successfully move to the next phase in life. Housing, education, life skills, job skill are all essential elements to transition to adulthood.
