Honduras
Honduras is located in Central America
between Nicaragua and Guatemala and
has a rapidly growing population.
A significant number of children are
malnourished, working children and
street children, who often don't make
it to age 18.
The Problem
• 21% of the population lives on less than a dollar a day
• 28% of the population is unemployed
• 39, 000 people are living with HIV/AIDS (from unicef)
• 25% of Honduran children are underweight
What Buckner is Doing
In 2006, the Honduran government invited Buckner
by special invitation of the First Lady to visit the
orphanages and needs of the children in Honduras.
Additionally, Buckner crossed the borders of
Honduras for the first time on an exploratory trip to
visit orphanages in the city of San Pedro Sula. Since
then, Honduras has become one of our fastest-growing areas of service.
Foster Care Program
Buckner began its foster care program in 2010 and
expects to have 30 foster families caring for children
in the country of Honduras by the end of the year.
Foster care provides residential services for children
in the home of an unrelated family. Foster care is
designed to provide structured home environments
for children who cannot live with their own family
due to extreme poverty, abuse or neglect so they
no longer have to live in institutional care.
San Pedro Sula Transitional Home
Transitional housing for children aging out of orphan
care. Residents are enrolled in an academic, vocational
or rehabilitation program. Services include case
management, room and board, education, job
training, tutoring and mentoring. Assistance with
childcare may also be provided for residents' children
(if applicable).
Emergency Shelter Assessment in Roatan
Transitional housing designed to strengthen
individuals and promote self-sufficiency. Residents
are enrolled in an academic, vocational or rehabilitation
program. Services include case management, room
and board, education, job training, tutoring and
mentoring.
Community Transformation Centers
The Honduras Community Transformation Centers are
located in Tegucigalpa and Roatan. They aim at making
life better for families by facilitating their ability to obtain education, secure jobs and receive medical treatment. The CTCs offer computer and ESL classes as well as employment help, organized sports and humanitarian aid.
Humanitarian Aid
Humanitarian Aid Services in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula offers services designed to build on individual and family strengths by giving families an opportunity to improve their circumstances with the assistance of financial, health or other support. Buckner has also distributed 62,473 pairs of shoes to children in Honduras to date.
