There are many centers within the Dallas metroplex, but Buckner collaborates particularly with the site located at the Dallas Children’s Home campus. Mi Escuelita Preschool teaches English and school readiness to children ages 2-5.
In addition to educational opportunities, children receive free health screenings, nutritional services, speech therapy and behavioral assessments. Speech, physical and mental delays, hearing, visual and dental deficiencies must all be addressed early for corrective procedures to make a lifelong difference.
Mi Escuelita Provides the Following Resources:
• A safe, secure environment where non-English speaking children of all cultures are taught the English language, literacy, math, science, basic computer and social skills necessary to have a successful school experience.
• One dedicated multilingual teacher for every 9 students.
• A daily take-home component to reinforce class lessons with parents in the native language yielding true dual-language literacy.
Mi Escuelita has provided these Measured Outcomes:
• Students completing a full 2 years at Mi Escuelita consistently demonstrate a 400-500 percent increase in English language skills and a 3,500 word oral base vocabulary, compared to an average base vocabulary of 2,800 words for a native English-speaking 5-year-old.
• Over 90 percent of students completing the two-year program at Mi Escuelita successfully transition directly into English-only kindergarten classrooms.
• During the last 5 years, Mi Escuelita Preschool has increased capacity by 50 percent, yet the waiting list for the program increases with each passing year.
