“But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.” 1 Corinthians 12:18

I can remember the moment I was saved. I can see the room, feel the comfort of the couch and the sun beaming through the window. I remember my friend’s hands clasping mine and the presence of Jesus as we called to him. As the words flowed from my mouth and the tears dripped from my eyes, I was made new.

I have shared this with other Christians, and I never thought my story could bring out someone else’s insecurity about their own Christian life, until someone told me it did.

He explained that he couldn’t remember the moment he was saved. We shared our testimonies, and they were completely opposite. His parents are strong Christian believers, and he was raised in the church with the values taught by his parents. He had his struggles, and through each one his faith was strengthened.

I wasn’t raised in a church, and even though I called myself Catholic, I didn’t know Jesus. I had a difficult youth that led from sexual assault and drug addictions to eventually finding an abusive relationship at 16. I had my first child at 17. I was trapped in this relationship for five years until my ex-husband left us.

I found God almost a year later. The more I infused myself in his Word, the more I realized he protected me all those years and has used my past to teach and help others.

When we finished sharing, we both realized something: we were jealous of each other’s testimonies. It made us laugh. I could not comprehend how someone could want to live in my shoes, but he said, “The way God has shown himself to you and brought you to him through all those traumatic events is tremendous.”

I felt proud of what I survived, but I told him I was envious because his life was the kind I had only seen on television growing up. His testimony gave me hope – the hope my kids and other generations have the chance to be raised the way he was.

As different as our lives are, Christians all have the same purpose: to love and serve our God and bring as many people to him as we can. God made some of us to be onstage, preaching his words or using our testimony to relate to others. Others hold the camera or the lights behind the scenes.

Some Christians are gently and kindly brought to God and others are pushed and bruised on their way to him. The path to God doesn’t define what kind of Christian you are. Not everyone comes to Christ the same way, but we are loved the same. We are Christians and are all children of God.

“If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all parts are glad.” 1 Corinthians 12:26
