It’s happened three times this year already an African American child is born to a mother who has made an adoption plan, but there are no families available to adopt the child. It’s a tragic circumstance which could be easily avoided, according to Buckner Adoption Network director Debbie Wynne.
“We need more prospective adoptive families to be open to adopting all different kinds of children whether they are children of color or children with special health conditions,” she said.
Two infant girls were born in June both African American, one with special needs and there are no families available to adopt either of them. Both of these girls have been placed in temporary foster care until a family can be identified.
“It’s very difficult for these birth mothers to have to place their children in foster families not knowing when their child’s ‘forever family’ will show up,” Wynne said. “We know there are families out there with open hearts. We just need to find them.”
With the recent announcement that Buckner will be facilitating adoptions from Ethiopia, Wynne stressed that there is now an even greater need for families to be more open.
Angela Davis, community coordinator for Buckner Adoption Network, encourages everyone who has considered adoption to “examine the possibility, but know your limitations.
“Potential adoptive families need to truthfully examine their environment and be honest with themselves in deciding whether or not they would be a good fit for a child who wouldn’t easily blend into their family. But ultimately, we all need to remember that love knows no color or boundaries.”
Buckner Adoption also recently announced that they will be facilitating adoptions from Ethiopia. To help support those who have adopted across racial lines, Buckner offers an area-wide support group, Shades of Love, which is open to all families who have adopted children of all races. More information about this support group and meeting dates can be found at www.buckneradoption.org.
