National Foster Care Month Highlights Thousands of Houston Children in Need of Families

Buckner Foster Care Urgently Recruits Christian Families to Meet the Demand

(HOUSTON, Texas) — In Texas, there are more than 34,000 children in the foster care system that need a family more than 6,500 in the Houston area (Region 6), alone. As National Foster Care Month begins, Buckner Foster Care urgently seeks to recruit Christian foster families to meet the overwhelming demand in the Houston area.

“Every child deserves a family,” said JoAnn Cole, director of the Buckner Foster Care and Adoption Network. “At Buckner, we believe that foster care is not a lifetime commitment to a child, but a commitment to be meaningful in a child’s lifetime. When you become a Buckner foster parent, you have the opportunity to be instrumental in changing a child’s life.”

For families or individuals who are interested in learning more about becoming a foster parent, Buckner will offer an informational seminar Saturday, May 19 from 9-11 a.m. and a foster care training, PRIDE class on Saturday, June 2 at 8 a.m. Individuals must complete an application and attend the informational seminar to register for the PRIDE class.

Both seminars will take place at Buckner, located at 3100 S. Gessner, Suite 109. Contact Angenette Pillows at 281-556-0440 to RSVP.

“After pursuing various paths for several years toward foster/adoption ministry, it was refreshing for us to find Buckner,” said James Berreth, Houston foster parent. “The staff presented a balanced, Biblical approach to providing care for those in need while remaining fully compliant with the requirements of the governing agencies.”

Erin Conaway, associate pastor at South Main Baptist Church, who has partnered with Buckner ministries for many years, said he is “amazed by the volume of compassion and dedicated service to our children through Buckner.” Buckner currently provides support for the church through international missions and after-school services, and several church members serve as foster parents, as well.

Buckner Foster Care is part of Buckner Children and Family Services, a Dallas-based Christian ministry which has been caring for children since 1879. With ministries throughout Texas, the United States and around the world, Buckner provides a strong, stable support system for foster families in Houston.
