The first full week of June is upon us. That means graduations and graduation parties.

It’s no different here at Buckner, where parents and families are celebrating weeks and weeks of hard work as they graduate from classes that equipped and empowered them with job skills, practical parenting techniques and tools to strengthen their families.

For many of them, it is the first time they will walk a graduation stage of any kind. Wearing a cap and gown following the completion of a course is a dream come true. The ceremony represents accomplishing a goal. Beyond the practical knowledge that has been gained, graduating gives people the confidence to dreamer bigger dreams and work toward them.

That’s cause for celebration. Extended family comes to these ceremonies and sees their loved ones hear their names called and walk confidently across a stage. Fists are pumped. Arms are raised. More than a few tears are shed.

As people of faith, let’s remember celebrate the accomplishments of others. Too often, Christians are known for what they don’t do. During this time of year, let us be known as people who celebrate like none other.

Let us follow the example of King David in 2 Samuel 6, where the Ark of the Covenant is brought into Jerusalem.

David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals. -2 Samuel 6:15

Let the joy of the Lord permeate our lives as we celebrate this year’s graduations with all our might.

Deeper reflection:

  • What are biblical reasons for celebration?
  • How do biblical heroes celebrate?

Next step:

  • Celebrate with your friends, neighbors and family this graduation season.
