3 conversations parents can have with their children this July Fourth

Growing up in a military town, July Fourth was always one of my favorite holidays. My family would pack in the car and head to a nearby air force base for a small carnival and marching bands. Everywhere I looked were reminders of the sacrifices people continue to make so all of us can be free.

At the end of the night, everyone gathered around a field where fireworks cascaded across the night sky. Few things are as magical for a child as fireworks.

Even if you don’t live near a military base, Independence Day can be a unique time of celebration and learning for children. Come together around a picnic and a local celebration. While you’re at it, here are three conversations you can have with you children that will encourage their academic and spiritual growth:

  • What is freedom? Encourage your children to think about what freedom truly is, both in this country and in Christ. Does it mean we can do whatever we want? Or is there something deeper? Reflect upon Galatians 5.
  • How did the United States become free? Share a bit of history with your children, including the Revolutionary War and the sacrifices people have made throughout the history of our nation to protect our freedom. Discuss what it means to make a sacrifice. What would they be willing to make sacrifices for?
  • How do we find freedom as individuals? Talk about the sacrifice Christ made on the cross so we can have a relationship with God. Share John 3:16-22 and John 8:31-32.

Enjoy the holiday together as a family. Happy Independence Day!
