3 ways shoes bring hope

For the past 16 years, we've been giving shoes to children around the world and in the United States. Most of us don't think twice about the shoes we put on our feet but to some, shoes can be life-changing. It means children can go to school and get an education. It means parents can go to work to provide for their families. It means fewer illnesses and diseases.

You can give shoes through a lot of organizations but when you give shoes to Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls, you also share the love of Christ and give hope in these ways:

1. Hope reinforces a belief that there is a team of people who wants you succeed. Hope is often communicated and transferred through interaction with other people. Every step of the process of Shoes for Orphan Souls – from their shoe collection to the prayer to the hand-written notes tucked carefully inside the shoes to the delivery – is packed with person after person investing into someone’s life.

When children read those notes, feel the effect of those prayers and see someone who cares enough about them to provide a new pair of shoes – possibly the first ones they’ve ever received – they understand people care about them. People want them to succeed. Consciously or unconsciously, that begins to give them positive outlook in life.

2. Hope helps children overcome adversity. Research indicates more hopeful people are better problem solvers. They tend to be more flexible, giving them the ability to see more creative solutions to obstacles. This is particularly important for vulnerable children who face a variety of challenges. They discover and follow new ways to succeed in life.

3. Hope helps children see avenues for a better life. Some researchers suggest hope is more than believing in something good; it’s also the ability to see pathways to a better life. Shoes allow children to be healthier, protecting children’s feet from a variety of diseases. Shoes also empower children to attend schools where footwear is required. There, they begin to learn and grow as people.

Through these experiences, children begin to see education and health as avenues to better living. As they grow older, they realize the opportunities before them and can take advantage of them.

Donating a new pair of shoes does more than provide new footwear; it provides hope to a child. And that hope very well could change his or her life.
