4 ways to walk into a new season

A devotion on trusting God in uncertain times

Have you ever felt God calling you into something you weren’t quite ready for? If you’ve followed Jesus for any length of time, I’m betting you are nodding your head and picturing a season (or two) where you just had to trust and jump without letting your flesh think too much.

I’m about to enter one of those seasons. I have a million questions about what this next chapter is going to look like, but God is reminding me that I don’t have to have all the answers to obey what he’s asking me to do.

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” – Matthew 6:33-34

So how do you enter a season of uncertainty and newness? So far, these are things God is guiding me to do.

  1. Lean on the often-quoted Scripture (2 Cor. 5:7): Walk by faith rather than sight. Dive deep into time with the Lord. Hold your relationship with him tight and let him lead you.
  2. Prayer. God knows everything – from our needs to our wants to our desires – but there’s something stretching for us in submitting those requests humbly to God. And not praying with an attitude to receive, but an attitude to be changed and softened and given perspective by God.
  3. Focus on the gifts of the Spirit. I have heard from God over and over, preparing me in this season, that joy is my weapon. When insecurity or fear tries to creep in, I have joy. There isn’t enough room for anxiety when I focus on the goodness of God.
  4. Surround yourself with worship and truth. Whether that’s dedicating time in your day to read the Bible, immersing yourself and your home in worship music or relying on a few trusted friends or loved ones to offer encouragement, God gives us tools to walk out obedience with support.

Walking into a new chapter or season can be unnerving, but don’t forget who you have leading the way ahead of you.

God keeps reminding me he sees me by having this worship song pop up nearly everywhere I go, and I hope it encourages you today, too:

“Tell this giant in my face, you’re not greater than my faith. Best believe me when I say, I got a new thing coming.”
