Are you willing to share a part of your life?

A devotion for National Volunteer Week

Every Sunday afternoon we open our home to anyone who wants to come and celebrate Sabbath with us. It’s a time to share a meal, have communion and spend intentional time connecting with each other.

Our hope is that as people are invited in to experience the rest that God extends to us, they will draw closer to the Lord and to others.

This weekly Sabbath celebration has opened my eyes to the daily opportunity we have to invite others into our lives. The apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians that he, Silvanus and Timothy shared the gospel and their own lives with them (1 Thessalonians 2:8). They didn’t only preach the good news – they lived it out daily with the people who were so dear to them.

As a volunteer coordinator at Buckner, I have the privilege of seeing volunteers share not only the good news of Jesus but also their lives with our Bucker families.

I’ve seen volunteers share their life’s work by teaching an entrepreneurship workshop, a diabetes awareness class or a computer coding class. I’ve seen volunteers share their family’s life by bringing their kids or grandkids to serve. I’ve seen church groups come and share their life of faith by helping us host an Easter event or leading a Bible study for those new to Christianity.

Every time a volunteer shares his or her life with us, a child or family is invited into hope, healing, growth and change.

This week is National Volunteer Week, and it’s a great time to think about areas of your life you can share with others. Perhaps it’s something you can teach. Or maybe you are great with kids or processing shoes. Whatever it is, it matters, and God can use that part of your life to invite others into something amazing.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” –1 Thessalonians 5:11

We're so glad you want to help. You can see all our opportunities on our volunteer page. But the best opportunity for out-of-state is to host a shoe drive. You can help collect new shoes to give to vulnerable children around the world.
