Early Thanksgiving meal from Houston Rockets draws neighbors to Buckner Family Hope Center at Northside
Music filled the gymnasium. Children danced and squirmed while they waited in line for the hot meal. Chicken or turkey? Macaroni and cheese? Peach cobbler, please! Children presented with shy grins as volunteers filled their plates while interacting with them.
Thanksgiving came early as Buckner Children and Family Services Houston and the Houston Rockets shared a heartwarming meal at the new Buckner Family Hope Center® at Northside on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The gathering included families from nearby neighborhoods who participate in programs and receive services at the Family Hope Center that recently relocated to the Northside location.
The Houston Rockets generously provided the meal, music, and fun.
“We are still introducing ourselves to the community since our ribbon-cutting and back-to-school event on August 2. Sharing a meal is a good way to become acquainted,” said Dior Burns, executive director of Buckner Children and Family Services Houston.
“Through events like this, we invite families to learn about Buckner International's after-school programs for their children and teens, adult education classes, and even volunteer opportunities. Buckner services are about protecting children and building strong families so everyone can live into their God-given potential.”
According to the city of Houston, nearly half of the families living in Northside have an average annual income under $25,000. The surrounding area of Aldine is experiencing an increase in population, yet inadequate wages and limited housing and social services.
The Thanksgiving meal ensures not only that families have the support they need but also feel the connection and community that the holidays are about. Many of the invitees have forged new friendships since they began attending classes or accepting family counseling services at the Buckner Family Hope Center. There are several teens who attend after-school programs and volunteered to help paint benches and planters on the children’s playground. A strong community continues at the Family Hope Center. "Neighbors know this is a place where one can find support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, said Burns
“Buckner is grateful because the generosity of our community collaborators like the Houston Rockets, and volunteers – combined with our dedicated staff – allows Buckner to share with families in Houston that hope shines at Thanksgiving and beyond,” added Burns.
