Rooted in Christ, rooted in love

An Advent devotion on love

"The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." – Deuteronomy 31:8 (NKJV)

The Christmas season has a special way of creating an atmosphere of reflection. Whether it's looking back on the year or participating in family traditions that have been going on for generations, there's a space of reflection and gratitude that tends to surface.

My family is full of diversity – from different cultures and countries represented, to being blended through the gift of foster care and adoption. As I look back on the last six Christmases, not one of them have been the same.

From celebrating as a newlywed with lots of family, to the next year being in a new state without any family close by. Or, one year starting a tradition with a child who wasn't with us the next season.

In moments of reflection, I'm able to see the ever-changing dynamics that come each December. While those dynamics are in constant change, I see the foundation that has always stayed true.

Love. These traditions and moments of reflection were always rooted in love because Christ has been at the center.

Whether the holiday was spent with extended cousins and aunts singing in different languages until 2 a.m., or if it was spent hanging a handprint ornament of a child who no longer lived in our home, Jesus is still with me, and his love carries me through.

My hope is however your Christmas looks this season, you're reminded God is with you because he loves you. In moments of gratitude or grief, he is with you.

If you find yourself excited to be with family or find yourself anxious, he loves you. May you be reminded no matter your family dynamic, you are part of HIS family, and I pray that brings intimate comfort and peace this season.
