The fruit of our lives

A devotion on reflecting the image of Jesus

"But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law." – Galatians 5:22-23

The Greek word translated “fruit” refers to the natural product of a living thing. Paul used “fruit” to help us understand the product of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside every believer. The fruit of the Spirit is produced by the Spirit, not by the Christian. The Greek word is singular, showing that “fruit” is a unified whole, not independent characteristics. As we grow, all the characteristics of Christ will be manifested in our lives.

Yet, like physical fruit needs time to grow, the fruit of the Spirit will not ripen in our lives overnight. Like a successful gardener must battle against weeds to enjoy the sweet fruit they desire, we must consistently work to rid our lives of the “weeds” of our old sinful natures, the distractions and burdens life brings, and the lies of the enemy that want to choke out the work of the Spirit.

We need to be our own “fruit inspectors” and regularly take an honest look at how we're acting, how we're treating others in our lives and how we're talking. How we act, speak and treat others is the proof of the fruit! If you don't have the proof, then it's time to cultivate it. How do we do that?

  1. Be intentional in seeking the Lord. Set an appointment with him daily. "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." – James 4:8
  2. Surround yourself with the things of God. What you allow yourself to watch and listen to matters!
  3. Practice the fruit. Pay attention to your actions and change what needs to be changed. The old saying “What would Jesus do?” is a great place to start. Or ask yourself, “How would I act if Jesus was standing here?”
  4. Change your words. Words are one of the most powerful keys to life. Change your words and you can change your entire life! "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." – Proverbs 18:21

As we step into this new season of spring, let’s take a moment to reflect on the “fruit” in our lives and commit to nurturing it so it more fully reflects the image of Jesus.
