What I want to be when I grow up
As children, we dream big — astronauts, teachers, doctors, superheroes. We imagine ourselves doing things that matter, making a difference. But as we grow older, those dreams often fade, overtaken by responsibilities, detours and even doubt.
Yet, growing up in God’s eyes isn’t about becoming successful by the world’s standards with the grandest paycheck, nicest car or biggest home. It’s about constantly becoming more like Jesus.
When asked what we want to be when we grow up, what if the answer was: holy, faithful, loving, patient, obedient? What if we dreamed of being peacemakers, servants, or people after God’s own heart?
Paul writes in Ephesians 4:15, “We are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ.”
Our identity in Christ isn’t found in our age, career, or accolades — it's evident in the ways we love, forgive and live out truth.
Growing in Christ means surrendering pride, dying to self, and allowing the Holy Spirit to shape us daily through times of rejoicing and times of sorrow. It means holding onto childlike faith and dependence in Christ while putting away childish selfishness.
So today, reflect: When I grow up, who do I want to be? Is your vision of what it means to be a successful adult rooted in God’s truth and purpose for your life?
As you take on the week ahead, challenge yourself to grow deeper. Let’s pursue growth that bears fruit of the spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
