Right before the new year, I took on a new role at Buckner and became director of events. I was extremely excited about the possibilities going into 2020. The events team had a successful 2019, and we were dreaming of new events and creative innovations to make 2020 even better. But then the virus…

None of our dreams or plans are happening as we imagined. One by one we have canceled events.

"But the virus" – a paralyzing phrase, dream shattering words.

What is my response when my world changes so dramatically and everything is uncertain? I’ve discovered how a simple change of a phrase can take me from insecurity or even despair to deeper faith.

Instead of "but the virus" (or whatever has rocked my world), I can respond with "but Jesus."

Everything in the world is uncertain and changing, but Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, and he is in control.

I am afraid of the what ifs, but Jesus is my rock, my refuge, my foundation and my security.

The isolation brings loneliness, but Jesus is Immanuel, and he is with me and will never leave me.

I am exhausted and frustrated, but Jesus has given me a spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind.

I don’t know how to make the right decisions, but Jesus pours out his wisdom generously as he has promised.

I don’t know who/what to believe, but Jesus is the truth, the way and the life.

I can’t, but Jesus can. His power is made perfect in my weakness.

Just by changing one phrase, my focus turns off the circumstances and on to Jesus and my faith is strengthened.

What is the key to having a faithful response in uncertain times? Put your “but” in the right place.

"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." – Proverbs 19:21
