Single mothers in Family Pathways continue working in health care during the coronavirus crisis

For many residents in our Buckner Family Pathways program, the coronavirus pandemic is a new season of life as many of them work in health care. Each day, these nurses and caregivers leave their children and put themselves on the frontlines of this disease to help. We are so proud of the work they do and that they are a part of our Family Pathways program.

LaShonda Haynes, Houston, Texas

“One never knows what each day is going to bring as I care for patients who may be negative or positive for the coronavirus. Because I am a single mother of two children, there are times I want to call in, but I know I can’t. Being in the nursing field is my duty to provide comfort, sympathy, safety and care for all patients. Sometimes I face anxiety because I am afraid of catching the COVID-19 virus. Praying is what I do every morning when I wake up, on the way to work and once I arrive. I never thought we all would be going through something like this, especially with an enormous shortage of PPE gear. This dilemma shall pass, and I will be able to breathe again and have peace of mind. God gave me healing hands to help others who are ill, and that is what I must do."

Rhonda Lee, Dallas, Texas

“I never thought I would begin my journey as an ER nurse in the midst of a global pandemic. This experience will forever shape my nursing career. I am happy to serve on the frontlines and learn in the process. This has been eye-opening, and I will continue to help push forward daily to win this fight against COVID-19.”

Kiera Kenebrew, Lufkin, Texas

“I’m blessed and fortunate to still be able to work during a time like this. I love being a caregiver because I know one day I will grow old and hope to have a caregiver who genuinely loves what they do and will care for others – no matter what is going on in the world.”

Lillian Patton, Midland, Texas
LVN student

“You put yourself at risk so patients can have a fighting chance to live. We put ourselves on the line for others. It’s definitely a calling, and I can’t see myself doing something different.”
