Big dreams aren’t possible without hope.
Many families in the Bachman Lake community of Dallas have big dreams and even bigger hopes for their children. These parents are up against tough odds though. Many are faced with paralyzing financial, economic, educational and family challenges.
In the Bachman Lake area:
- 40% of children live below the poverty line
- Largest concentrated area with children younger than age 5
- CPS removal rate is twice the average in Dallas County
- 57% of residents have less than a high school education
We often think of “hope” as an idea, as something you can’t really see.
But the truth is, you can see hope. It looks like a first-generation college student pursuing her dream of a career in nursing on a full scholarship.
Rocio Donjuan was the first in her family to receive a driver’s license and with her five younger siblings looking on, is now the first in her family to attend college. The Donjuan family has been receiving services from Buckner since 2017, and they have blossomed with the support, encouragement and resources offered at the Buckner Family Hope Center at Bachman Lake.
Rocio’s mother, Virginia, heard about the Family Hope Center through the elementary school her youngest children attended and joined the parenting class Buckner offered at the school. After that class, having an entrepreneurial spirit, she enrolled her and Rocio’s father in the Family Hope Center’s business and transformational planning classes. From these classes and with Buckner’s support, the Donjuan family was able to open a party equipment rental business that helps provide a substantial income for the family of eight.
“If I could give my five younger siblings some advice it would be whenever you have something in your mind, always go for it. Don’t look back, look forward. There will be many obstacles, not everything is easy. At times you’ll feel down like you can’t do it, but it’s possible if you dedicate yourself and work hard. You can get there.” – Rocio Donjuan
Rocio exhibits hope as she talks about the dreams she has of graduating college as a nurse, serving others and continuing her education in the future to become a nurse practitioner.
Because children are at the center of a family, they are at the heart of Buckner Family Hope Centers.
You can help more children and families like the Donjuans achieve their dreams.
With your help, we can build a center of hope where vulnerable families can take part in educational programs such as financial empowerment and job skills classes, as well as gain access to counseling, aid, family coaching and more so they can reach their full potential. The goal is to strengthen families where they can remain together, become self-sustainable, and full of hope to achieve their dreams.
Join us in giving today, so together we can help more deserving families reach their full potential and give their children a better future through the new Buckner Family Hope Center at Bachman Lake.
