Last week, a full house of nearly 200 people attended the fourth annual Heart of Buckner Amarillo fundraiser at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. The evening featured a moderated conversation between Houston Astros catcher Robinson Chirinos (formerly with the Texas Rangers, 2013-2018) and former Amarillo Globe-News sports editor and columnist Jon Mark Beilue.

Robinson, who will report for spring training with the Astros next week, discussed his childhood and the impact of baseball on his life. He also shared his thoughts on the importance of faith, community and service, as well as his work over the years with Buckner International.

When asked about his time with the Texas Rangers, Robinson said, “Playing with the Rangers was a blessing – not only playing but being in Texas and meeting the people of Buckner.”

Robinson has helped promote the work of Buckner in a variety of ways. He’s also encouraged children served by the ministry, first by taking part in last year’s Rangers Winter Caravan to Longview where he met children involved in the Buckner Family Hope Center there. Later, he led a baseball clinic for children participating in the Buckner Family Hope Center at Bachman Lake in Dallas.

“Buckner cares about people,” Robinson said. “They find ways to help people and give back to the community. I feel blessed to be able to work with them and help tell others about their work.”

Robinson is one person God has connected with Buckner to shine hope into the lives of vulnerable children and families. You’re another one of those people. By reading these devotions, we know you’re praying for those in need. We know you’re seeking to improve the lives of others. And we’re thankful for it.

Like God has led you and Robinson to Buckner, he is leading people into your life regularly. Are you looking for them? Are you looking for ways you can be a light in the lives of others?

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. –Psalm 16:11
