Nelda Turner proves there is a place for everyone to volunteer and use their unique skills to meet the needs of vulnerable children and families.

For nearly 20 years, Buckner has played a role in her family. Nelda has two grandsons who were adopted through Buckner Foster Care and Adoption and feels a strong call to support Buckner programs in Lubbock

She currently serves on the ambassador council and delivers home-cooked meals to many Buckner families.

“I love to bring them a casserole and a salad and usually some fruit. One family I would visit, they loved watermelon. I made sure to bring that every time,” Nelda shares. “I’ve had the opportunity to build relationships with these families through this. One father in a family I brought meals to was an IT guy. I needed some help and hired him. When I asked what he charged, all he asked for was an extra meal.”

Nelda also enjoys helping with child care during the Buckner Family Pathways courses in the evenings and coordinating events and fundraisers.

“When you think of Nelda, she’s a volunteer that will jump in and do whatever you need,” says Becky Robertson, ministry engagement coordinator for West Texas. “We need cupcakes – she’s there. Wherever there’s a need, she’ll find a way to help.”

Nelda smiles as she thinks about volunteering and how it has always been a key component of her life.

“God commands us to give and to be generous,” she says. “It’s simply a part of life.”

Nelda says everyone should volunteer, regardless of age or season of life, because all families walk through trials and sometimes just a hug or smile can make all the difference.

Or even a casserole.

During the pandemic, volunteer opportunities may look different, but the needs in our communities have only grown. See all the volunteer opportunities available and help a vulnerable child or family in your own community.
