This week, Houston City Council voted to approve Buckner International to receive its first grant from the city. The $100,000 grant is for a contract between the City of Houston and Buckner Children and Family Services. It will help Buckner provide case management and wrap-around services to 30 families in District D through the Buckner Family Hope Center of Houston at Reed Road.

The Housing and Community Development Department recommended the approval of the contract, as it will help support services to vulnerable families in danger of being separated. The families currently reside at New Hope Housing, located next to the Buckner Family Hope Center, as they meet New Hope Housing’s low to moderate-income qualifications.

The services provided to the 30 families by the Buckner Family Hope Center will include family coaching (case management), adult empowerment (i.e. General Equivalency Diploma and parenting classes) and children programs. The goal is to help these families find stability and permanence before the possible removal of their children into the system.

“We are thrilled to hear about the grant approval because of what it means to Buckner’s service in the community this year, but also due to the growth it represents regarding our presence in Houston,” said Shawna Roy, senior executive director for Buckner Children and Family Services of Southeast Texas.

Buckner International has operated in the Houston-area for more than 63 years.

“Buckner has grown its programs and services in Houston immensely over the past decade, and I believe the grant recognizes how the city of Houston is embracing Buckner as a completely unique and proactive solution to preventing many of the challenges our community faces,” Roy added.

“By working to keep families together, we are keeping children out of the system, helping parents become financially self-sufficient, creating better opportunities for future generations and overall strengthening the community of Houston.”

The Buckner Family Hope Center of Houston at Reed Road opened in October 2018 to serve South Houston. It is located on the Cornerstone Community campus, a collaborative nonprofit venture in partnership with Star of Hope, New Hope Housing and WorkFaith Connection.

Buckner International operates 27 similar Family Hope Centers across Texas and in six countries. Buckner Family Hope Centers are child-centered, family-focused places where families go to find hope, support, and empowerment in their community to reach their fullest potential. Programs include family coaching, GED, ESL, computer literacy, job training, after-school and summer programs for children, parenting and financial education, spiritual enrichment, and mentoring.
