Struggling impoverished Lubbock families have new hope thanks to a Buckner ministry that opened today in the area.

The grand opening of the Buckner Family Hope Center of Lubbock was commemorated with a public ribbon cutting and reception. The event marked the official start of programs and services for West Texas’ first Buckner Family Hope Center, which is a community-based places of hope where families go to find strength and empowerment to reach their God given potential.

“We are incredibly blessed to open our doors to the community,” said Angelina Rodriguez, who was announced as the center’s director in Jan. Rodriguez previously worked as Buckner Lubbock’s Foster Care Home Developer Supervisor.

“Buckner Family Hope Centers are our preventative approach to reducing the rate of family disintegration and number of children who end up in the system,” said Rodriguez. “Families who come to the Buckner Family Hope Center will find the tools and support needed to grow stronger and break the cycle of poverty through education and jobs.”

Buckner International operates 28 Buckner Family Hope Centers around Texas and within six countries. Family Hope Center services typically range from a variety of community events that engage families, such as parent education classes, job skills training, financial empowerment, family coaching, programing for children, counseling and spiritual enrichment.

Nearly one in every five Lubbock families live in poverty, but the programs and services offered through the Buckner Family Hope Center will be a resource to help engage, equip and elevate these struggling families.

The creation of the Buckner Family Hope Center of Lubbock is made possible by a gift from the estate of Maxine Steige, who lived in Lubbock from 1968-2014. She and her husband, Herbert, led a successful dental practice for 35 years and were generous to numerous organizations. In honor of Steige, the interior garden of the Buckner Family Hope Center is named the “Maxine Steige Butterfly Garden.”

Buckner has served the Lubbock-area since 1954. Additional programs include foster care and adoption; Buckner Family Pathways, which provides single-parent families safe housing and resources to reach their higher education goals; and the Buckner FYi Center, which ministers to children who have aged out of foster care.
