Literacy and transforming lives were the topics of discussion during the quarterly dinner of the Junior League of The Woodlands last week. Shawna Roy, director of the Buckner Family Hope Center at Aldine, spoke to more than 200 women in attendance about the importance of literacy.

The Family Hope Center has been chosen as the Junior League’s location for its sixth annual Literacy Carnival and the group also has placed a “Free Little Library” stand at the Family Hope Center so community members can exchange books.

Roy said the star of the show for the evening was 9-year-old Deja, who read a poem to the audience and received a standing ovation. Deja has overcome several physical, mental and academic obstacles to become what Roy calls a “triumph.”

“Deja attends the Buckner Family Hope Center at Aldine’s after-school program along with her three sisters,” Roy said.  “She is always full of energy and excitement. Recently, Deja came into the center extra excited because she had progressed five reading levels. Deja started the school year on Reading Level D, but now thanks to dedicated parents, teachers, after-school program staff and volunteers, she has been moved up to Reading Level M. She now proclaims she is the ‘best reader in the world.’

Roy told the audience that “because of volunteers like you, Deja’s story is filled with remarkable moments of triumph. The confidence Deja has and the progress she’s making is a direct result of the support she receives from those who understand how special she is and how the giving of their time and talents can make a difference.”
