What is the new normal? And how do we go back to the old normal? I feel like that is what everyone is talking about these days. But everyone’s normal is not the same. To be honest, the past year is not a normal I would want to go back to.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September and I have three young children. My year has been filled with lots of ups, downs, and a lot of the time, uncertainty. When I was first diagnosed, I realized I had no control over the outcome. I quickly understood that my desire for “normal” revealed my own sinful desire for control. My heart craved safe and what I deemed normal days for my family.

But as believers, we are not called to safe and what the world sees as “normal.” We are foreigners in this land, passing through to our eternal home. Peter tells us, “I urge you as strangers and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you” (I Peter 2:11). The desire to be safe had to be handed over to the Lord. Safe as the world views it isn’t where the Lord is working. He works in the lions’ den with brave Daniel, on the ark when Noah acted in faith, in the lonely cave with David. The Bible promises us the Lord provides better than the world’s standard of safe. He provides rest.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28).

During these uncertain times, I pray we can all find our rest in the Lord and realize that the only place we are truly safe is in the arms of our Savior. I pray together we can release any desire for control, because as the Lord has graciously showed me so many times, we do not have it nor ever will. Let us pray for the hurting and press on toward the goal Christ has called us.

“He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless; youths may faint and grow weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who trust in the in the Lord will renew their strength. –Isaiah 40:29-30
