Finding rest in your new normal

A devotion on creating purposeful rest

If you are like me, you might be trying to figure out a new normal after 18 months of a virus that has completely changed how we do everything. We have had to modify how we celebrate holidays, how we eat in restaurants, and even how we do our grocery shopping. Although some of these new normal, like drive-through birthday parades honking your car horn, have been fun, other changes, like isolating from loved ones and worrying about our health, have been taxing on our spirits.

Included in this new normal is how to rest. Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Now, it may be difficult to imagine an easy yoke and a light burden as Jesus prompted. The words themselves are weighed down with heaviness, like an ox bearing a yoke around its neck. So how can we find rest? How can Jesus give us his rest?

I have learned to be intentional about my breaks just as Jesus did when he would withdraw himself from the crowd (Luke 5:16). I take walks in nature where I can observe and reflect on God’s creation over the years.

How can you slow down and focus on life-giving activities that replenish you? Let's think of simple yet purposeful ways to incorporate rest in our daily lives.

Today, pray this with me: Jesus, I want to receive your word about rest into my life. I want to be intentional about my rest. I want to obey your will in my life. Amen.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” –Psalms 62:1
