Like so many Buckner programs, the Buckner Teen Enrichment Academy (TEA) in Houston moved from an in-person format to an online platform.
Learning how to balance virtual school and online after-school activities can be a challenge for some, but four dedicated girls chose to participate and give it their all.
The juniors and seniors not only attended nearly every after-school session, but also completed the Empower2Employ program and became the first to successfully graduate virtually from the program.
Teens challenged themselves and learned valuable life-skills
The teens said they enjoyed hopping onto Zoom after their school day to see what new and exciting activity was lined up for the day.
One student said she was shy and almost didn't join the program. She was also concerned about the time commitment as she was attending school full time virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of the program, she said it was the best decision she ever made because she learned so much and gained more confidence in herself.
Program gave students encouragement and direction for life after graduation
Other students reported learning more about how to get a jumpstart on their future careers and explored their future careers through research and presentations. Students also met professionals from the local community to ask questions about their day-to-day activities.
The Empower2Employ program helped provide these juniors and seniors students with more information about future careers and college life, while also learning how to manage their finances along the way.
