Last week, a team of medical professionals from North Way Christian Community Church in Pittsburgh, Pa., ministered to Buckner Family Hope Center families in Honduras. In this post, trip participant Mackenzie Huey explains some of the medical aid the families received and how the nutritional classes, including how to assemble and use a water filter, impacts the community of San Pedro Sula.

Tuesday was our second day of running the clinic at the Family Hope Center. When we arrived at 8:30 a.m., there was already a line of people outside waiting to be seen, even though we didn’t open the doors until 9 a.m. For the next half hour, we set up and prepared for our patients for the day.

We had four nurses assessing and triaging patients, all of whom were then seen by three doctors. In total, we were able to see and treat 122 people today, doubling the number we saw yesterday.

In the afternoon, Scott, our Buckner representative, showed us the water filters Buckner provides to families in the program and explained why clean water is so important. Then our whole team taught the women in the Family Hope Center how to put their water filter together to be used in their own homes.

We learned these families spend close to $4 a day on clean water, or $120 a month. This is a huge financial burden that is now removed from these families. It was incredible to witness the looks of joy and appreciation these women had. Buckner’s mission is to empower and equip people to make a better life for themselves, and today this was evidenced by the attitude and initiative the women had immediately after receiving the water filters. One of their first questions was if they could start selling the purified water they made. After a month in Buckner’s program, these women are already taking initiative to make better lives for their families. God is doing amazing things here in San Pedro Sula, and we are blessed to be a part of it.
