Finding God's rhythm
We are in a season of new schedules, routines and rhythms. The fall always brings opportunities, or maybe a few forced changes, to our schedules. I'm just coming back to work after parental leave, and that has definitely required some changes to our schedules.
We often try to control every second of our day; many days, we can't sustain it. Scripture teaches us to give our plans and our agendas to God (Proverbs 16:3). I've found a God-run calendar is much more of a rhythm than a routine.
A routine refers to the same things done in the same way every time. I would describe a rhythm as a combination of routines working at a specific tempo to drive a harmonious sound. The tempo may change, and the beat may look different, but together, it can work in the way that the Lord intends. He ultimately should drive our rhythm.
Using the language of rhythm has allowed us to hold our daily routines and schedules open-handed – ready for the Lord to pivot as needed.
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens ... He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." – Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11
These truths speak to the Lord's hand in our rhythms. Scripture continues to encourage us that even in a cursed world, we can still see the good he is doing.
So, when we live in God's rhythm, our hope for our schedules, routines and tasks are in his hands. This week may not go exactly as planned, but pause and reflect on what good you notice that comes from the Lord.
