Strengthening dads is strengthening families

helping dads build stronger families

Fatherhood is one of God’s most powerful callings and also one of the most challenging. They won’t say it, but many dads who provide, protect, and guide their families feel they have little encouragement and even less support. It doesn’t have to be that way. At Buckner International, we believe that when fathers are equipped, families are strengthened.

Here is the reality facing today’s fathers. In the United States, about 18.4 million children live without a biological, step, or adoptive father in the home. Fathers are absent in roughly 80% of single‑parent households. While most attention is rightly placed on single mothers, about 5% of U.S. children live with a single father, a number that has only grown in recent decades.

Texas isn’t any different. Nearly 35% of Texas children, which comes out to about 2.5 million, live in single‑parent homes. We see the results in elevated risks related to poverty, educational outcomes, and emotional health. Research has consistently shown that children with engaged fathers are more likely to perform better in school and less likely to experience behavioral challenges, law enforcement issues, or substance abuse.

The pressure to provide and the silence it creates

Society isn’t very sympathetic to a man in need. All too often the idea of fatherhood is simply to financially provide while “hold it together.” Studies by the CDC and the UK’s Office of National Statistics have shown that over 60% of men report feeling strong social pressure to handle challenges on their own, and two‑thirds perceive asking for help as a sign of weakness. This pressure is only made worse for fathers who are single, underemployed, or navigating co‑parenting relationships.

As a result, men are far less likely to seek assistance even when their families would benefit. National research indicates that as many as 70% of young men avoid seeking help for mental, emotional, or practical challenges. This reluctance to be seen as vulnerable extends beyond mental health to financial coaching and parenting education, which leaves many fathers feeling isolated as they try to care for their families alone.

Why father-focused support matters

Scripture reminds us that God never intended fathers to answer the call alone. Galatians 6:2 (NIV) tells us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Without intervention, cultural expectations and economic strain will erode a dad’s confidence. When fathers lack support, families feel it. Conversely, when fathers are involved, families flourish.

This truth is seen in state data. Texas’ Fatherhood EFFECT initiative, a program overseen by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, exists to meet this need by building social support for dads and father figures. Buckner International is honored to be a trusted provider of this program in East Texas.

How Buckner walks alongside fathers

Through Fatherhood EFFECT, Buckner offers free life-skill education and coaching in Beaumont, Longview, and their surrounding counties. The program serves expecting dads, biological dads, stepfathers, foster dads, kinship caregivers, guardians, and grandfathers of children up to age 17. Fatherhood takes many forms and we welcome them.

Using the nationally recognized 24/7 Dad® curriculum, Buckner equips men with practical skills in co‑parenting, communication, emotional engagement, life planning, and understanding their vital role in a child’s development. Just as importantly, fathers find a community safe space where asking for help is seen not as a weakness, but as wisdom.

Beyond Fatherhood EFFECT, Buckner offers support through Family Hope Centers, counseling, spiritual growth, and financial empowerment services, ensuring that fathers receive well-rounded care for their families and their faith.

There is a biblical call to invest in fathers. The Bible is clear about the importance of fatherhood and shared responsibility: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 (NIV).

When we walk alongside fathers, we help dads grow into the leaders God has called them to be.

Programs like Fatherhood EFFECT change lives. Building a community of growth and education removes stigmas and offers hope where there was once isolation. Every class, every conversation, and every prayer becomes an investment not just in one father but in an entire family and the generations that follow.

Together, we can strengthen fathers, restore families, and reflect the love of our Heavenly Father to those who need it most.
