Seniors fill backpacks with school supplies for foster children

Backpacks weren’t popular when residents of Buckner Westminster Place attended grade school as many as 70 years ago.

Nevertheless, residents of the Longview senior living community gathered in full force to help stuff 57 brand-new backpacks with school supplies for local foster children grades pre-K through 12.

“I just wanted to help out because I believe education is the key to much,” said resident Joe Erwin. “With a good education, all the problems will go away.”

Buckner Westminster is partnering with Buckner Children and Family Services in Longview to host a back-to-school bash for local students where residents will get to pass the new backpacks, as well as advice for the new school year, along to the students.
