Thousands of volunteers serve for 1DayHouston

More than 200 volunteers impact three Buckner Houston locations

Nearly 50,000 volunteers mobilized to impact those in need across the entire city of Houston on April 29 as part of the 1DayHouston initiative, led by Love Has No Limits. Both Buckner Family Hope Center® locations in Houston were Serve Centers, as well as Buckner Parkway Place.

Love Has No Limits hosted a similar event in Los Angeles last year where more than 20,000 volunteers participated in the campaign. The goal is to continue the impact in Houston for the next two years. Nearly 200 volunteers visited the three Buckner locations to serve for the day.

At the Family Hope Center at Aldine, 80 volunteers participated across the location through various ways. There were 246 families in the distribution line to receive food. Eight volunteers from a local cosmetology school offered free haircuts to families. Volunteers also helped with landscaping and directing the distribution line, while coaches from Houston Dynamo FC held a mini soccer camp for children.

“We had volunteers assist us with gardening, distribution of shoes and cereals, sports camps for our children, and haircuts,” said Dior Burns, director of administration and operations for Buckner Children and Family Services in Houston. “These were all free services available for our community.”

At the Family Hope Center at Reed Road, volunteers were able to serve 237 individuals.

“With the help of 92 volunteers, we now have a beautiful garden, one of the walls in our hall was painted and two picnic tables were donated,” Burns shared.

Across Houston at Parkway Place, 25 volunteers completed two main projects. They accomplished rebuilding eight raised garden beds, including the removal of the existing beds. The volunteers also planted flowers and other foliage outside the memory care area.

“The new beds will bring happiness to our residents for years to come and will require far less maintenance than the old garden beds,” Burns said. “These projects allow some of our most vulnerable residents and families to enjoy the beauty of the campus while remaining safely within a secured area. Altogether, these projects will touch the lives of hundreds of residents here at Parkway Place.”

1DayHouston also served as an outreach opportunity for individuals and families in the communities Buckner serves, to hear and know more about the programs available to them.
