We will not be afraid, though the earth trembles

A devotion on finding strength despite our circumstances

“God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore, we will not be afraid though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with its turmoil.” Psalm 46:1-3

When I was younger, my mom would share this verse with me at bedtime when I was scared. She focused on the first verse of the passage, reminding me that God is always present no matter the circumstances.

As I grew up, I became more familiar with the next few verses, and they have become a deep comfort to me as I experienced times of uncertainty or fear. In these verses, God tells us that in every situation, in all that is going on in our world, He can still be found. I do not need to be afraid. In fact, He is the one finding us — rescuing us from our fears and giving us strength to be a comfort and light to others.

Buckner employees and volunteers often choose to enter into moments of hurt, confusion, and grief with the clients we serve. We get to walk with families who have experienced loss, children who have not been thoroughly protected, young people who are wrestling through life’s big questions. We see the pain and hopelessness that life’s circumstances can bring.

But we still feel blessed. We are blessed because despite the hardships of life, our story can serve as a reminder of the refuge and strength that God has been for us, and that He can be that for others as well. God, through his constant presence, is still working good for those who love Him.

I still need this reminder regularly (which my mom graciously continues to provide) and I want to encourage you to remind yourself of this truth — no matter what is going on in your life or in our world, God is ready and present to provide a refuge and strength that is unmatched.
