The grand opening of the Buckner Family Hope Center® in San Antonio was celebrated with a ribbon cutting, officially inviting families to a safe place for support and community.

The Family Hope Center offers classes and services to strengthen San Antonio families, such as children’s summer programs, family coaching, counseling, and spiritual enrichment. They also offer free adult education classes such as life skills, financial empowerment, and more.

“The programs, activities and events at the Family Hope Center have the same goal. Whether it’s a class to help teach parenting skills, a family coach who supports a job search, or simply building a community with others through fun activities like a round of Lotería, what these programs have in common is that they all work to strengthen families and build community,” said Manny Alaniz, director of the Buckner Family Hope Center in San Antonio.

Even though San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the U.S., reports show its families are struggling to make ends meet. Almost 20% of Bexar County residents live in households earning less than the federal poverty level. Primary concerns in Bexar County include access to mental health resources, poverty, lack of childcare, teen pregnancy, rising divorce rates, gang activity, substance abuse, and limited spiritual community.

“We believe when families are strong, they thrive,” said Alaniz. “We want to invest deeply in each family that comes through our doors, help them overcome the barriers they face, and create generational change for their children and their children’s children.”
