Clinging to Christ

Have you ever felt like life is racing exceptionally fast and all you can do is hold on tight? This pace of life will inevitably happen to us personally and professionally – and sometimes simultaneously.

God’s word assures us of His constant presence and guidance no matter the pace of life.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” -Deuteronomy 31:8

But how can we best hold on tight as followers of Jesus when life becomes chaotic, challenging and uncertain?

As I ponder this question, I am reminded of a turning point in the renowned novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. To set the sceneSusan and Lucy have just witnessed the sacrificial death of Aslan (the lion character who serves as a metaphor for Christ) and the girls are heartbroken their friend is gone. But soon, Aslan appears “shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane.” (p. 178). They are gloriously reunited before embarking on a journey where good conquers evil and Aslan moves to make all things new.

The girls find themselves overwhelmed by the whirlwind of events, and do not have the energy for the treacherous and exhausting trek. Aslan gently invites them to continue on by saying, “We have a long journey to go. You must ride on me (pg. 180).” The girls cling to his mane as he skillfully navigates difficult terrain without growing weary. They not only make it to their destination safely, but also in awe of the power of Aslan.

Have you felt like Lucy and Susan riding on Aslan’s back? Are you holding on tight to Christ and His word, bounding into the unknown, but simultaneously trusting in his goodness, protection and love?

When the pace of life goes full throttle, will you choose to joyfully trust and hold on in willful submission to the good, true and perfect will of our Lord and Savior, Jesus?
