Summer's end approaching

How parents can make the final weeks of summer memorable

Summer is a time for sunshine, relaxation and making cherished memories. As the school year quickly approaches, families are searching for ways to make the last few weeks of the season memorable. Whether you're seeking thrills or simply want to unwind, there's a summer activity out there for everyone to make the final moments of summer count. Turn off the screens, and explore ideas to help you soak up the season as a family.

Outdoor Adventures:

  • Hit the Trails: Explore local parks or state parks and discover scenic hiking or biking trails.
  • Staying cool is a must, so visit splash pads or pools, have a water balloon fight, or visit a water park.
  • Backyard Camping: Experience the joy of camping without the travel by pitching a tent in your backyard. Enjoy stargazing and roasting marshmallows (S'mores).
  • Classic Outdoor Games: Organize a game of tag, hide-and-seek, or kickball with friends and family.
  • Nature Exploration: Turn your backyard into a discovery zone. Explore plants, insects, or use items found on hikes for crafting activities.

Creative and Engaging Activities:

  • DIY Crafts: Get crafty with recycled materials or create masterpieces inspired by nature.
  • Learning Experiences: Visit your local library for engaging events and activities. You can also try fun science experiments or explore new recipes at home.
  • Scavenger Hunts: Plan scavenger hunts both indoors and outdoors for a dose of adventure. Escape Rooms for Kids are great as well.
  • Community Events: Many cities have movies in the park. You can also look for local festivals, fairs, farmers markets, and outdoor concerts, or attend a local festival, which can be a great way to learn about other cultures.
  • Family Fun Nights: Host themed dinners, organize talent shows, or play board games together.  Have a movie in the backyard as a fun family night.
  • Volunteer: Give back to your community by participating with a program in your community, or in local clean-up events or food drives.

Making Summer Safe:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when active.
  • Seek shade: Find cool, shaded areas for breaks.
  • Appropriate attire: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Sun protection: Apply sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and consider sunglasses.
  • Consider water safety and educate yourself on precautions you can take during water activities
  • Mind the heat: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Summer is a time to create cherished memories and embrace new experiences. With a little planning and creativity, you can enjoy a safe, fun, and fulfilling summer. Get out there and make the most of it!
