Faith Focus: How much is a good mom worth?
Last year, a Dallas man tried to figure out how much his stay-at-home wife would earn if she were paid market value for taking care of their son in addition to the other tasks she does regularly.
His answer? $73,960. Most observers believe that estimate is low. We know that's not low. That’s ridiculous.
Mothers offer far more than services. Buckner moms care for children at their most vulnerable. They let young people know they are loved, that these children have a place in the world. This often means long, stressful hours that are often overlooked.
Moms are priceless. The way they love their families is invaluable.
Mothers daily should know how valued they are by their families. Often, Proverbs 31 is cited as a source for qualities of Godly women. But take a closer look at the end of the passage. Husbands and children of Godly women have a response to those qualities.
"Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
'Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.'
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
– Proverbs 31:28-31
My prayer is that every mom feels appreciated every day. You're priceless. May it be particularly known during these days leading up to Mother’s Day.
Deeper reflection:
- What does it mean to be a Godly mother?
- How should we respond to the Godly women around us?
Next steps:
- Look for ways to make Mother's Day unique. It doesn't need to be extravagant, just heartfelt.
- Call your mom. Take her to lunch. Thank her for all she's done.
