Abigail's Smile
Meet Abigail. She first came to Buckner through Bible classes and Vacation Bible School at the Buckner Community Transformation Center in Jocotenango, a small community nestled in the hills of Antigua, Guatemala. She attends Bible school every Thursday at the center, along with her brother and sister.
She’s 7 years old and in June she received a new pair of pink and silver athletic shoes through volunteers with Shoes for Orphan Souls®, the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International. When Abigail received her new shoes she was so excited and happy, partly because pink is her favorite color, but mostly because her family can’t afford to buy new shoes.
Abigail’s family fell on hard times starting last January when her dad lost his job working for the municipal government. Abigail’s mother stays home to take care of her three children. Money is tight and it’s a struggle to get by.
Clothing and shoes are expensive in Guatemala, where minimum wage jobs pay less than $300 a month. The new tennis shoes Abigail received would have cost her family at least $25 – money that they need to spend on more pressing necessities, like food, clean water or wood to cook with. Because you give and volunteer, together we have helped provide relief to Abigail and her family.
With her pretty pink tennis shoes, Abigail is able to go to school with her head held high, confident and happy to know that someone cared enough to choose the perfect pair for her. Thank you for giving this sweet girl a spring in her step through the gift of new shoes.
