After leaving a toxic relationship of eight years, Kiara Phillips stepped out in faith with no plan in sight of what she would do or how she would raise three children on her own.
It was a dark time. But she had faith and a praying mother who believed in her and encouraged her. But even with her mother's help watching the children, Kiara struggled as she spent long hours at clinics and studying to make her dream of becoming a physical therapist a reality.
That's when Kiara found Buckner Family Pathways. There, she found support, encouragement and the tools she needed to be a mother to her children, be a successful student and fulfill her dreams.
Since participating in Family Pathways, Kiara has been on the Dean’s List, completed the Physical Therapist Assistant program from Houston Community College, and passed the National Physical Therapy Examination. Kiara continues to participate in Family Pathways as she is completing her bachelor’s degree to become a Licensed Physical Therapist.
Though not easy, Kiara found strength in God and through the support of her mother, who watches Kiara's children while she goes to study groups.
The Phillips family is thriving, and Kiara's children are motivated by their mother's success to achieve their goals and dreams as well. They are all excelling at their respective schools and day care, and Kiara's oldest daughter, 7, attends the Arabic Immersion Magnet School where she participates in Arabic instruction for half the day. She also is in her third year of tennis.
Kiara contributes success to all those who understand and support single parent students.
“The struggle is real,” Kiara said. “Buckner requires a lot of its participants, but if you work the plan, keep the faith and persevere, then there is nothing that can stop you.”
