Buckner partners with local agencies to send mobile medical clinic to Kenya
By Chelsea Quackenbush
DALLAS – Buckner partnered with Christian Alliance for Humanitarian Aid, Baylor Hospital’s Faith in Action mission and the Texas Baptist Men to restore a trailer into a mobile medical clinic to be used in Bungoma, a community in rural Kenya.
The clinic was shipped out June 14 and will arrive in mid-August by boat.
The Christian Alliance for Humanitarian Aid donated the container. Several volunteers from Texas Baptist Men did welding and plumbing work so the clinic would have running water and be ready to cross the ocean. Faith in Action, the missions outreach of Baylor Healthcare System, donated supplies, exam beds, walkers, crutches, wheelchairs and many other items.
“We’re so thankful for the collaboration with these generous organizations to make this project possible,” said Matt Asato, director of international humanitarian aid for Buckner. “It’s a great example of Christian humanitarian aid organizations maximizing resources for Kingdom work. This clinic will directly impact lives of the people living in Bungoma who would otherwise not have access to medical services we often take for granted.”
The new Buckner medical exam trailer is 8 feet by 40 feet and is stamped with a bright red cross on the front of the clinic to serve as a sign of hope to the children and families of Bungoma.
It has two medical exam rooms and a dental room. Health care specialists will be able to provide preventative health care, as well as treatment for the sick. There is a laboratory for testing and a refrigerator for storing vaccinations and other medications.
“Baylor appreciates any opportunity to collaborate with a humanitarian aid partner,” said Don Sewell, director of Faith in Action initiatives. “We both have an eternal purpose behind what we do. [Baylor] works on the physical side, the body, but we also want to work on the heart, which is what Buckner does. Buckner’s strengths combined with our strengths equal tremendous impact on local and international venues.”
