Church builds home for Rio Grande Valley family during Spring Break
While some people may go on exotic vacations for Spring Break, 24 volunteers from First Baptist Church in Lufkin traveled to a Peñitas, Texas, to build a home for a family that participates with the Buckner Family Hope Center.
Elizabeth Mendez and Jose Vasquez have been involved with the Family Hope Center for seven years. They have taken all the classes provided from Faith and Finance and Jobs for Life to parenthood and ESL courses. During that time, they also completed family coaching and were active volunteers.
Through completing family coaching and the courses, Elizabeth and Jose incorporated those lessons into their family and they started to grow. Not only were their relationships better, but they were better able to manage their finances and become self-sufficient.
Even still, they lived with their three children in a home that was falling apart. The home would flood with every rainfall and there were mold on the walls. The home was far from the safe haven they desired for their family.
But thanks to First Baptist Church in Lufkin, they will now have a brand new home. First Baptist funded and provided all the labor for the home. They started building the home in their church parking lot months prior to the Spring Break trip. Then during Spring Break, they finished construction. Elizabeth, Jose and their children are ecstatic to have their new home.
"I have graduated from the classes in Buckner and now I get to see the results from all my hard work," Elizabeth said.
