Faith Focus: Can I really change the world?
Two sentences adorn many of Buckner International’s promotional pieces: Transform lives, change the world. They succinctly sum up what Buckner does around the globe as multitudes of families are strengthened and children are cared for.
But in the face of daunting issues like poverty and hopeless, is that really possible? Can I really transform the world? It’s an honest question to ask. To be frank, it’s one all of us ask ourselves from time to time.
Biblically, the answer is yes. In Matthew 17, Jesus said: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
Jesus goes beyond words to prove that it can be done. He shows us how to do it. Throughout his life, Jesus invested in people – learning about them, caring for them and acting on their behalf. He especially spent much of his time and energy with 12 chosen people, an inner circle of sorts.
Every day, he taught the disciples. He modeled what it means to follow God daily. The ripple effects of him instilling God’s Word in the lives of a dozen ordinary men continue today. The disciples took the gospel beyond Israel to countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The disciples they made spread the gospel even further.
The result of one person discipiling another year after year is a multiplying effect that led to the gospel changing lives around the world. That’s transforming the world! SHARE THIS
Deeper reflection:
• Why does Jesus invest his life in 12 people? Why not more? Why not fewer?
• Reading through Jesus’ ministry, what are some ways he disciples those who follow him? How can you follow that example with others?
Next steps:
• Pick one person you would like to invest time into today. It can be a family member, coworker, friend or a student. If you can’t think of someone, pray about volunteering through Buckner.
• Schedule time with them later this week where you can serve them in some way.
